How to register a domain.

(versión en español)
What is a domain?
A domain or domain name is an identifier that groups a number of devices or services connected to the Internet.
Another possible less technical definition, would be the name that gives presence (usually a company) on the Internet.
A domain is always associated with the IP address of a device connected to the Internet, as it could be a web server. This makes it easier to connect with one of these devices, since it is easier to remember a name like an ip address.

Some concepts of domain registration
Once we have decided the domain name, we pass to register it in any of the recorders that can be found on the web.
In the domain registration process, we will be asked to fill in the data of registrant and data of two more contacts:

  • Registrant of the domain: The owner of the domain. It may be a natural person or legal entity.
  • Administrative Contact: It is responsible for making changes on the domain, such as changing the DNS servers associated with it.
  • Billing Contact: It is who the invoice is issued to.
  • Technical contact. It is not relevant and is usually the domain registrar itself. Usually not even be asked to enter their data in the process of registration.

The Importance of putting the data correctly
It is very important, or more convenient, do not put false information in the registrant and in each of the contacts. For example, if we want to get the auth code needed to transfer the domain, this is sent to the email address of the administrative contact. If you do not have access to this email address will not be able to get it.
If we want to change the data of registrant or contacts, it may be made on the website of the registrar from the customer area. But there may be other registrars wich, in order to do such changes, we will have to fill and submit forms on paper along with photocopies of ID, etc … to identify. If when we fill out the registrant data of the domain with false information, will be nearly impossible to identify and to make such changes.
However, if we want to have access to this data with any query tool (such as Linux whois), many registrars have a tool called “Whois Privacy” that masks the actual data of the registrant and contacts .

Assign DNS servers – Alternative parking or redirection
In the registration process, the last thing we usually will be asked is we introduce the DNS servers. Here you will have to specify the DNS servers of our hosting provider, if we stay in one. Actually you can put any DNS server, but obviously would not make much sense.
Most registrars offer the option to park the domain, also known as parking pas de viagra. If we choose this option, when we will enter the domain, a registrar page will appear indicating that the domain is registered with it.
Another option is usually offered by the domain registrar, is redirect the domain to another URL, so that when we will entrer the domain in our bowser, it will lead us to the indicated URL.

Make sure the domain is registered in your name.
There are companies that register domains, although they are not registrar as such, and that in the registration time this companies register themselves as domain owner (registrant). One unprofessional way to tie customer. Therefore, before registring make sure that the company will register the domain does not perform such practices.

Attentive to the expiration of the domain – Redemption period and pending delete.
As we approach the end of the domain, several emails are sent to the email address of administrative contact. Usually it is sent one email one month before expiration, another when missing 15 days, another when missing 7 days, another when missing 1 day, and finally the day it expires. It is also often send an email to the address of the registrant, but may vary according to the registrar.
Once the domain expires we have 30 days to renew the domain at no additional cost. After this period of 30 days the domain enters a period called REDEMPTION PERIOD. This period lasts another 30 days in which we can renew the domain, but at an additional cost which will depend on the registrar. Finally, after redemption period, the domain enters in PENDING DELETE period which lasts between 5 and 10 days. After this period the domain is returned to the available domains pool.

Transfer of domains between registrars.
If you already have a domain registered, you may want to transfer the domain to another registrar. The transfer process is handled by the destination registrar, so you should access the registrar you want to transfer the domain and to initiate the transfer process.
In this transfer process, we will be asked for the domain AUTH CODE, which it must be provided by the registrar where the domain is registered. As mentioned above, the AUTH CODE will be sent to the email address of the administrative contact of the domain.
Once the transfer process has been initiated, a confirmation message for transfer will be sent to the email address of the new administrative contact. Once accepted and within a week, at most, the domain registrar will be changed.
